Portland

*In progress*

General:

WerqTogether, a Portland-based organization similar to Traction/Open Arms, has extensive guides on moving to the greater Portland area.

They also have a Move Planner that could be a helpful tool. It lays out housing, work, money, and more in sequence for a move to Portland, and it doesn’t save any of your information. This can help with budgeting & setting financial goals. They also have a step-by-step guide for moving to Portland.

Housing:

Low-Income Housing Options:

Room / Shared Housing Options:

  • Facebook queer & trans housing groups can be a great way to find a room to rent with safe people and build community right away:
  • Furnished Finder is like an Airbnb but for longer-term stays. You stay in someone’s pre-furnished apartment or room. There is a soft background check, and you coordinate directly with the landlord about rental specifics.
    • Helpful short-term option to get acquainted with the city
    • Commonly used by travel nurses & remote workers exploring a new city

Transitional Housing:

  • Transition Projects provides transitional housing to those already located in the Portland metro area.
  • YWCA is a large, local resource for survivors of assault that provides emergency housing and a variety of services. If you identify as a survivor of domestic violence or assault, the YWCA is a great resource:
    • (503) 235-5333 is their crisis line
    • GetServices@ywcapdx.org is their email for safety and stabilization assessments

Financial Support:

  • These financial support options do not require an Oregon address:

    • The Trans Safety Fund is a BIPoC and Trans-led fund based in Switzerland focused on supporting Trans lives financially
    • Cascades Community Placement Services assist with relocating to the Pacific Northwest. They may also have housing connections.
    • Voix Noire provides financial support to Black women and marginalized genders through a variety of ways, including groceries, direct grants, and medical support
    • The Nicolas Gogan Foundation accepts GoFundMe submissions
  • These financial support options DO require an Oregon address:

    • Marsha P. Johnson Fund is run through the Q Center, which also has a ton of resources for the local Portland LGBTQ+ community
    • Black & Beyond the Binary Collective has a Housing Safety Fund that has open submission periods. They are dedicated to building leadership, healing, and safety for Black - African transgender, queer, nonbinary, Two-Spirit, intersex, and asexual (TQN2SIA+) Oregonians
