Queer Centers and Resources

  • The Space: LGBTQ Youth Center
    • Primarily for youth, but worth connecting with for people of all ages
    • May have job program / may be able to help in hiring
    • Reportedly good spot for disabled community
  • Yakima Pride: Organization that throws the annual Pride Parade, and miscellaneous other events
    • Pride Parade is excellent, absolutely worth attending
    • Also throw socials, movie screenings, etc.

Queer-Friendly Locations:

  • Bearded Monkey Music: has open mics and live shows, popular among queer people
  • North Town Coffeehouse: very popular queer hangout spot
  • Yakima Maker Space: queer-friendly spot for various crafts (woodworking, sewing, 3D printing, etc)
  • Good Times N Tattoos: queer-owned tattoo shop, hosts miscellaneous events
  • Chainsaw Cat: music venue that hosts lots of queer-friendly events
  • Single Hill Brewing: Tuesdays are bingo night hosted by a lovely queer woman
  • Aventura Coffee: Latinx/transgender friendly space
  • 1997 Cafe: queer friendly coffee and breakfast
  • Bayt Jenin coffeehouse: Pro-Palestinian coffee shop

Healthcare:

  • Cedar River Clinics: Feminist-owned clinic that specializes in queer and trans healthcare.
    • Would be able to refer to trans-friendly PCPs
    • Also able to refer to PCPs competent in chronic pain management
  • Best Practices Medical Clinic: reportedly queer-friendly and gives great care
  • Central Washington Family Medicine: Latinx/queer friendly with physicians that have HRT/GAC experience (Alicia Sattler & Dr.Mayra Correa Barada)
    • Takes Molina Applehealth in clinic and pharmacy
  • Yakima Free Clinic: Latinx/queer friendly clinic that is completely free
    • Certain days/hours are set aside for transgender youth for privacy

Job Hunting:

  • Colleges can be good - look at PNWU and YVC. Avoid Perry Tech, not queer-friendly
  • For government jobs, look into the State of Washington, Yakima County, and the City of Yakima. Each has their own job board

Miscellaneous Tips:

  • Food stamps count double at the farmer’s market (ex: you can buy $2 of goods with $1 of stamps).

Fun Activities:

  • Ellensburg is a fun day trip, and is more queer than Yakima
    • Has great farmer’s market on Saturday mornings (queer friendly)
  • Many good art events!
    • Chalk Art Festival (each fall) especially recommended
  • Ron’s Coin and Collectables: excellent store for comic books/tabletop games
  • Appletown Game and Hobby: nice warhammer/dnd/magic community
  • Single Hill brewing: bingo on tuesdays, trivia on wednesdays, other events
  • Fanfest: Annual Yakima pop-culture convention (August) & queer friendly!
